Usado por la fuerza aérea de EE.UU. desde 1977, el AWACS se instala en un avión Boeing 707, especialmente modificado, con su antena de radar principal montada en un domo rotatorio. Puede detectar, seguir e identificar a aeronaves que vuelan a baja altura a una distancia de 370 km (200 mi náuticas) y a objetivos en altura a distancias mucho mayores. Puede también monitorizar el tráfico marítimo y opera bajo cualquier condición climática. Su sistema computacional puede evaluar la acción del enemigo y determinar la ubicación y disponibilidad de cualquier aeronave dentro de su alcance. Los operadores de su sistema de comunicaciones protegido pueden guiar el ataque de los aviones amigos contra los aviones enemigos.
